Predators A key consideration of keeping free range chickens on your land or in your garden is exposure to neighbourhood dogs that have not been ‘chicken-proofed’ as well as cats, rats and other potential predators. If there is a risk of predation by pests or pets then it is better to keep your chickens in a safe enclosure. Even enclosures are sometimes not sufficient to keep predators at bay and for some, protecting their hens is an ongoing campaign.
